  • A Golden Sunrise Along The Buffalo River, America's first national river, begins its 132-mile tumble down toward the White River in the upper Ponca wilderness, some of the most remote and rugged country in the Ozarks. This stretch of the river is not suitable for floating, has little access and is mostly seen only be dedicated hikers. But the river reaches the historic Boxley Valley and begins a peaceful meandering that stretches the length of the long, narrow break in the hills before it begins its magnificent sweeps around the high limestone bluffs for which it is famous.

  • A golden view of Lake Superior along Minnesota's North Shore. This shot was taken at The Naniboujou Lodge and Restaurant.<br />
<br />
Naniboujou Lodge was first conceived in the 1920's as an ultra exclusive private club. Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey and Ring Lardner were among its charter members. A membership of 1000 was originally sought, but when the stock market crashed on "Black Friday" precipitating the 1929 depression, the club began to fail. In the mid 1930's the club reached a state of financial shambles. The mortgage was foreclosed, and it was sold. <br />
Throughout the succeeding years the Lodge has been owned and operated by various corporations or private individuals and families. Today you will find an exciting revitalized Naniboujou. Still reflecting the aura of the 20's, Naniboujou is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The Lodge boasts Minnesota's largest native rock fireplace, a 200 ton work of art which stands in the 30 x 80 foot Great Hall (now the dining room)

  • Watching the sun set in the shores of Kona Hawaii on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship "Pride Of America"<br />
<br />
May 6th was a roller-coaster of emotions. It was Linda's and My 20th Anniversary, so there was much joy and celebration in our moods. Just as the sun was starting to set along the shores of Kona, Hawaii on our trip, we received the news that a long time family friend of 30+ years had just passed away. <br />
<br />
She was a "Neighborhood Parent" to me growing up (this was back in the days when, not only was it allowed, it was expected that neighbors should reprimand us youngsters for doing stupid things if they noticed it), and later in life a respected friend. She was also a life long friend of my Mom and Dad. My wife grew up on the same street and knew her just as well. <br />
<br />
As we received the news on the top deck of the cruise ship we looked to the setting sun, as I held my mom and we cried together watching the sun fade away. For as much pain as there was in that moment, watching the sun fall from the heavens, we both knew that there was no better place or time to have to deal with the emotions of the moment. <br />
<br />
Luckily I had my camera with me (when do I not?) and I was able to take a few shots to memorialize that blissfully painful moment. And that's why I love photography too, such emotions can be captured forever with a single click of a button.

  • Hemerocallis fulva, the Orange Daylily, Tawny Daylily, Tiger Daylily or Ditch Lily, is a species of daylily native to Asia. It is very widely grown as an ornamental plant in temperate climates for its showy flowers and ease of cultivation.<br />
<br />
Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Does well in a wide range of well-drained soils. Deadhead spent flowers daily for neatness and remove scapes when flowers have completed bloom. Divide to maintain vigor when the clumps become overcrowded. A tough plant that is tolerant of poor soil, summer heat and humidity.

  • A pretty pink Zinnia flower contrasted against a metallic backdrop. <br />
<br />
Zinnia is a genus of 20 species of annual and perennial plants of the family Asteraceae. They are native to scrub and dry grassland in an area stretching from the Southwestern United States to South America, with a centre of diversity in Mexico<br />
<br />
Zinnia leaves are opposite and usually stalkless (sessile), with a shape ranging from linear to ovate, and pale to middle green in color. The flowers have a range of appearances, from a single row of petals, to a dome shape, with the colors white, chartreuse, yellow, orange, red, purple, and lilac.<br />
<br />
Zinnias are popular garden flowers, usually grown from seed, and preferably in fertile, humus-rich, and well-drained soil, in an area with full sun. They will reseed themselves each year. Over 100 cultivars have been produced since selective breeding started in the 19th century.

  • A Soft Deep Red Tulip Contrasted Against A Rough Textured Backdrop.<br />
<br />
This is one of the world's most easily recognized and loved flowers. Tulip Flowers are voracious sun seekers (like the sunflower) and will sway their heads in crazy contortions seeking out the best angle for light. This makes them a symbol of opportunity, adjustment, advancement, and aspiration. They are commonly thought to represent attainment of spiritual awareness too. Because they are from bulbs, and return every year (like the daffodil) tulips are symbolic of resurrection and determination. The immediately identifiable shape of their colorful blooms make them a comfortable flower.<br />
<br />
A Turkish legend may be responsible for the red tulip's symbolism. The story goes that a prince named Farhad was love struck by a maiden named Shirin. When Farhad learned that Shirin had been killed, he was so overcome with grief that he killed himself - riding his horse over the edge of a cliff. It's said that a scarlet tulip sprang up from each droplet of his blood, giving the red tulip the meaning 'perfect love.'

  • A robust, drought tolerant perennial, native to the midwestern and southeastern United States. flowers are arranged individually on sturdy, elongated stems with soft lavender or purple petals surrounding an iridescent red-orange, coned center. Prefers full sun to partial shade in fertile, well-drained soils.<br />
<br />
Echinacea is a genus, or group of herbaceous flowering plants in the daisy family, Asteraceae. The nine species it contains are commonly called coneflowers<br />
<br />
The Coneflower has many historical uses as well. The Fox used purple coneflower as an anticonvulsive and gastro-intestinal aid. The Kiowa chewed coneflower root for coughs and sore throats. The Omaha and Pawnee used a smoke treatment as a remedy for headache. A poultice of smashed roots were applied as an anesthetic to arms and hands by the Omaha, and a poultice was applied to enlarged glands as a treatment for diseases such as mumps by the Pawnee, Ponca, Dakota, and Winnebago. Purple coneflower was used to increase endurance in the sweat lodge ceremony by the Dakota, Pawnee, Ponca, and Winnebago.<br />
<br />
The purple coneflower grows in open rocky prairies and plains. It is found primarily in the Great Plains, east of the Rocky Mountains from Texas to Montana and Saskatchewan, to eastern Oklahoma, western Iowa, and western Minnesota
