• The lion is one of the four big cats in the genus Panthera and a member of the family Felidae. With some males exceeding 250 kg in weight, it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger.

Lions are the only cats that live in groups, which are called prides. Prides are family units that may include up to three males, a dozen or so females, and their young. All of a pride's lionesses are related, and female cubs typically stay with the group as they age. Young males eventually leave and establish their own prides by taking over a group headed by another male.

This shot was taken at the Saint Louis Zoo in Big Cat Country. Sinewy muscles, beautiful fur, shearing teeth, padded toes, supple body, all describe the inhabitants of Big Cat Country. This spectacular natural outdoor setting for tigers, leopards and other big cats was constructed in 1975. Dramatic, simulated rock formations provide realistic backdrops for the handsome felines. Big Cat Country takes the form of a large wheel. Three large open yards, almost one-third of an acre each, have trees and shrubs, boulders and a pool. The center yard has a 27-foot-high waterfall. There are four smaller yards that provide excellent viewing or photographing of the climbing cats. From a safe distance, of course!

 • In a realm where dreams fluttered like flags in the sky, there lived a gnome known throughout the lands as the Patriotic Dreamweaver. With a beard as intricate as the roots of the Liberty Tree and a hat that spiraled like fireworks, this whimsical creature was the guardian of festivities and a symbol of freedom in the mythical world.

Every year, as the day of independence approached, the townsfolk would find their dreams filled with more color, more joy, and an overwhelming sense of pride. It was the Dreamweaver's doing, his magic swirling through the night, infusing dreams with the essence of patriotism.

This year, as the stars shimmered in anticipation, the Dreamweaver set out to create his masterpiece. With every twirl of his beard and every spark from his hat, he wove a tapestry of dreams so vivid that the entire realm awoke feeling inspired. On the morning of the grand celebration, the townsfolk gathered, their spirits as high as the colorful flags adorning their homes.

As the parade commenced, it was said that the Dreamweaver watched from a cloud, his eyes twinkling like the stars on his hat. With his mission complete, the gnome disappeared in a swirl of red, white, and blue, leaving behind a trail of joy and a reminder that freedom and unity are worth celebrating, in dreams and in reality.

 • In the vast expanse of an untouched wilderness, a Native American tribe gathered to witness an extraordinary event. Every decade, a chosen artist amongst them was tasked with capturing the essence of their ancient traditions and beliefs in a single artwork.

The young artist, with a heart filled with reverence and gratitude, dedicated countless hours to perfecting his masterpiece. He skillfully merged the tribal heritage with his own artistic vision, giving birth to the majestic "Wings of the Ancestors." The eagle, a sacred creature woven deeply into their folklore, emerged from the canvas with a commanding presence.

As the tribe set their eyes upon the artwork, they marveled at the vibrant bold colors that painted the eagle's wings—a testament to the artist's passion and respect for his ancestry. Fluid details delicately traced each fractal feather, revealing the intricate interconnectedness of all living beings. The hyper-realism of the eagle's piercing eyes carried the ancestral wisdom, evoking a profound sense of connection to their roots.

The artwork became a beacon of unity, fostering a renewed pride in their heritage. The tribe found solace in knowing that their traditions and spirits would be carried forward through the generations. The artwork's sharp details whispered stories of resilience, reminding them of the strength they carried within themselves.

Through "Wings of the Ancestors," the Native American eagle came to life, bridging the gap between past and present. The bold colors, fluid details, hyper-realism, and sharp precision embodied the essence of their rich culture, encouraging all who beheld the art to embrace their own heritage and celebrate the beauty of their collective journey.

 • In a realm where the skies whispered of valor and the winds sang of freedom, the Great Eagle soared, its wings painting strokes of bravery across the heavens. Known as "Liberty's Plume," this was no ordinary bird; it was a guardian of the skies, a sentinel of the lofty ideals upon which the Land of the Free was built. Its eyes, orbs of fiery determination, gleamed brighter than the stars, and its cry, a clarion call to the courageous, reverberated through the mountains and valleys, stirring the hearts of all who heard it.

Legend had it that Liberty's Plume was born from the aspirations of a nation, its feathers a tapestry of dreams woven from the red, white, and blue of a flag that symbolized a people's quest for independence. Each feather was etched with the fractal patterns of liberty, a complex array of freedoms that resonated with the pulse of the proud nation. It was said that as long as the eagle flew high, the people's spirits would never be caged.

Each Fourth of July, as the sky blazed with fireworks, Liberty's Plume would emerge, its silhouette a backdrop to the explosions of color. Children would point up in awe, their eyes reflecting the spectacle, as elders told tales of the eagle's past exploits, of battles fought and liberties won, of the eagle's unyielding vigilance over the land it called home. The Great Eagle was more than a symbol; it was the living embodiment of a country's soul.

As years turned to centuries, the story of Liberty's Plume was passed down through generations. It became the nation's mythos, a story of enduring freedom and unbreakable will. And so, the Great Eagle continues its eternal flight, a fractal guardian woven into the fabric of an ever-evolving dream, its majestic wings unfurled in an endless salute to the brave and the free.

 • Lions mate several times in a year and females give birth to up to four or five cubs after a gestational period lasting nearly three and a half to four months. Cubs suckle from their mothers and other pride females up to six months and in case of males usually stay with the pride up to two years of age. Despite protection of the pride, up to 50% of lion cubs in the wild do not survive owing to starvation or occasional cannibalism by other lions. When nomadic male lions take over a pride from the resident males, after a bloody and often mortal battle, they kill their cubs. This serves not only to bring the lionesses in heat but also to ensure only their gene pool continues in the next generation.

 • Once upon a time, in a small town nestled amidst rolling hills, there stood an old red barn that held the secrets of a bygone era. Its weathered wood and crumbling structure told stories of hard work and long-forgotten dreams. Nature had taken over generously, as vegetation wrapped around it like a living tapestry, creating a stunning display of vibrant color tones that seemed almost hyper-realistic.

Legend had it that this barn was home to magical creatures, whispered to be guardians of the countryside. The crisp details of the vines and leaves that spiraled upward unveiled a world that surpassed imagination. Each blade of grass, each bud of a flower seemed to hold a hidden power, offering protection and wisdom to those who dared to venture near.

Rumor had it that if the barn's walls could speak, they would tell tales of a time when the barn was a hub of activity, housing thriving farm animals and echoing with the sound of laughter. But as the years passed, the barn had weathered the storms of time, standing steadfastly amidst the changing world surrounding it.

The locals came to revere the old red barn, considering it a symbol of the resilience and enduring beauty found in nature's embrace. It became a point of pride for the town, drawing visitors from near and far who sought to witness firsthand the living tapestry that adorned its weathered exterior. The barn was a testament to the strength and grace that could be found in the most unexpected places, a beacon of hope and inspiration.

And so, the old red barn, with its weathered wood and crumbling structure, continued to stand tall, embraced by vibrant vegetation that painted the landscape like an artist's brush. It served as a reminder that within the passage of time, beauty could thrive, and that even the most ordinary structures could become extraordinary through the touch of nature's tapestry.

 • Watching the sun set in the shores of Kona Hawaii on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship "Pride Of America"

May 6th was a roller-coaster of emotions. It was Linda's and My 20th Anniversary, so there was much joy and celebration in our moods. Just as the sun was starting to set along the shores of Kona, Hawaii on our trip, we received the news that a long time family friend of 30+ years had just passed away.

She was a "Neighborhood Parent" to me growing up (this was back in the days when, not only was it allowed, it was expected that neighbors should reprimand us youngsters for doing stupid things if they noticed it), and later in life a respected friend. She was also a life long friend of my Mom and Dad. My wife grew up on the same street and knew her just as well.

As we received the news on the top deck of the cruise ship we looked to the setting sun, as I held my mom and we cried together watching the sun fade away. For as much pain as there was in that moment, watching the sun fall from the heavens, we both knew that there was no better place or time to have to deal with the emotions of the moment.

Luckily I had my camera with me (when do I not?) and I was able to take a few shots to memorialize that blissfully painful moment. And that's why I love photography too, such emotions can be captured forever with a single click of a button.

 • In the serene realm of Enchanted Winter Whimsy, Santa and Mrs. Claus stood amidst the hush of falling snow, their eyes sparkling with the joy of the season. They were the beloved guardians of Christmas, keepers of the flame of wonder in the hearts of all.

The North Pole was abuzz with excitement, but here, in this tranquil corner of the forest, peace reigned. The reindeer, with their majestic antlers glistening under the moon's glow, watched over the couple with affection and pride. They knew their roles in the night's great venture, ready to dash through the skies.

Santa, with his suit of crimson and a beard as white as the snow underfoot, clasped Mrs. Claus's hand. Her own red cloak was a splash of color against the wintry white, and her smile was the warmth that could melt hearts.

"Are you ready, my dear?" Santa's voice rumbled like gentle thunder, his eyes twinkling with mirth.

Mrs. Claus nodded, her cheeks rosy from the cold. "The children await. Let us fill their hearts with wonder."

With a flourish of his hand, Santa summoned the magic of the Northern Lights. They swirled above, casting a spell that whispered of distant lands and dreams yet to be born. The sleigh, laden with toys and tales, was ready for flight.

In that moment, the world seemed to hold its breath. The future was unwritten, a canvas of hope and enchantment. Santa and Mrs. Claus, surrounded by their reindeer guardians, embarked on their voyage, not just to deliver gifts, but to weave the fabric of memories, of joyous laughter and family gatherings, that would last a lifetime.

And so, under the celestial dance of auroras, they soared into the night, their laughter a melody that resonated through the crisp winter air. The legend of Enchanted Winter Whimsy lived on, a testament to the magic of Christmas and the everlasting love shared by Santa and Mrs. Claus.

 • As the man and the boy arrived at the Mississippi River in Missouri, the boy's eyes went wide with excitement. He had always dreamed of going fishing with his grandpa, and today, it was finally going to happen. With the bright afternoon light and puffy clouds overhead, the duo set out to find the perfect spot near the edge of the lake.

As they cast their lines into the water, the man shared stories of his own childhood spent fishing along this same riverbank. The boy listened intently, captivated by the tales of adventure and the nostalgia in his grandpa's voice. With the reflections of the water adding to their picturesque environment, they passed the time together in peaceful silence.

As they waited for a catch, the man could feel a special bond with his grandson forming. He could see the boy's passion for nature and the outdoors, and he felt a deep sense of pride in passing down this tradition and hobby. From the low angle, he could see how much the boy was enjoying it all, and he knew they would both remember this day forever.
• Deep in the heart of the forest, there lived a semi-abstract male Pileated woodpecker with Fibonacci spiral fractal wings. His wings were a work of art, mesmerizing all who gazed upon his majestic form. The crisp details and hyper-realistic colors of his wings set him apart from all others in the forest. The woodpecker had known no other way of life, and he took great pride in his vibrant and complex wings.

One day, as he perched atop a tree, a group of birds landed nearby, gazing in awe at the semi-abstract male Pileated woodpecker with his Fibonacci spiral fractal wings. They were captivated by the intricate patterns and the vibrant color tones that danced before their eyes. The woodpecker smiled contentedly at their admiration, proud of his unique appearance.

However, not everyone appreciated the woodpecker's stunning wings. A group of envious birds began to bully him, teasing him relentlessly for being different. The woodpecker was heartbroken, but he refused to let their words bring him down. Instead, he took to the sky, soaring higher and higher until he was out of sight.

As he flew, the woodpecker couldn't help but revel in the beauty of his surroundings. The Fibonacci spiral fractal wings that had once brought him so much attention now felt like a natural extension of himself. He no longer needed approval from others to feel validated. The stunning colors and patterns of his wings were simply a reflection of the beauty that existed naturally within him.

In the winter wonderland, as snowflakes waltzed in the chilly air, Santa sat on a bench, taking a respite from his holiday preparations. Beside him lay his sack of toys, a beacon of the joy awaiting the world.

The turkey, known as Tobias among the woodland creatures, approached Santa with a cheerful waddle, a candy cane in his beak, striped with festive red and white. Tobias, aware of Santa’s fondness for sweets, had sought the perfect candy cane for his jolly friend.

Santa’s eyes twinkled behind his spectacles as he chuckled, “Ho, ho, ho! What have we here, Tobias? A gift for me?”

Tobias nodded, his chest puffed with pride, extending the candy cane towards Santa in gratitude for the kindness he'd shown the North Pole's creatures.

Accepting the candy cane with a warm smile, Santa patted Tobias on the head, “Thank you, my fine feathered friend."
