  • The Merriam Street Bridge is a truss bridge that spans the east channel of the Mississippi River between Nicollet Island and the east bank of the river in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The bridge was originally built in 1887 by King Iron Bridge Company as one of the four spans of the Broadway Avenue Bridge. When the Broadway Avenue Bridge was reconstructed in 1987, one span was preserved and moved to Nicollet Island. The truss span is actually decorative; the bridge is supported by a beam from underneath.<br />
<br />
The original Broadway Avenue Bridge was one of the fanciest bridges on the Mississippi River. It featured finials on each top corner and a band of scrolls, crosses, and lines between them. The horizontal struts and guard railings used X-shapes as a pattern. Each end of the bridge has a hexagonal cast iron plate embossed with the date and the designer of the bridge. The bridge now serves as a connector between parkland on Nicollet Island and the Saint Anthony Main development on the east bank, allowing good opportunities for visitors to stroll across the river.

I hope this bold abstraction takes your mind and eye's in as many different places as mine.

  • The Third Avenue Bridge (originally known as the St. Anthony Falls Bridge). This is a landmark structure of in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It carries road traffic across the Mississippi River and right over the upper fringes of Saint Anthony Falls. The multi-arched bridge meets with Third Avenue in downtown Minneapolis at its south end, but curves as it crosses the river, and connects with Central Avenue on its north end. The shallow curve in the bridge was built to avoid fractures in the limestone bedrock that supports the bridge piers.<br />
<br />
Much of the design work was done by Minneapolis city engineer Frederick W. Cappelen, who was responsible for a number of other local bridges and structures. Beyond the bridge you see a high industrial area setting the mood for my approach to this shot.

Broemmelsiek Park provides a recreational space for individuals throughout the St. Charles County area. This park offers more than seven miles of multi-use trails as well as an off-leash dog area with small water features in which dogs may swim. The trail is open for equestrian use, bicycling and hiking. There are multiple fishing lakes in the park that are stocked with bass, catfish and bluegill. The astronomy station in the park offers a viewing site with ten concrete viewing stations equipped with telescopes. <br />
<br />
Keeping with the county's mission to preserve green space, the St. Charles County Parks Department is designing Broemmelsiek Park as a passive recreation area focused on the natural features of the land. The 384 acre property is located in southwestern St. Charles County five miles west of Highway 40-61 off State Route DD. Broemmelsiek Park features several lakes, a blend of oak-hickory forest and rolling pastures suitable for a variety of recreation activities and park amenities.

The trails in this 500+ acre park are in 2 separate sections joined together by restored grassy prairie. They are a mixture of hard packed dirt trails, several small rock gardens, and a few rocky creek crossings.<br />
<br />
The front section is accessed via the concrete bridge that is just off the first parking lot. It's a mixture of wooded single track and open meadows, with several short but steep climbs. Rocky in the beginning, it switches to a dirt base as you start up the ridge.<br />
<br />
The trail then follows the contours of the meadows to the second section, making for a fun, but quick trip to the wooded area in the back of the park. A winding, dirt hillside trail, mixed with rocks leads to a creek crossing, then a rocky ascent as the trail meanders along another ridge line leading to a picturesque view of a local equestrian farm and pond. This section features a wide swooping turn which leads back across the power line alley that divides this part of the trail.

  • Watching the sun set in the shores of Kona Hawaii on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship "Pride Of America"<br />
<br />
May 6th was a roller-coaster of emotions. It was Linda's and My 20th Anniversary, so there was much joy and celebration in our moods. Just as the sun was starting to set along the shores of Kona, Hawaii on our trip, we received the news that a long time family friend of 30+ years had just passed away. <br />
<br />
She was a "Neighborhood Parent" to me growing up (this was back in the days when, not only was it allowed, it was expected that neighbors should reprimand us youngsters for doing stupid things if they noticed it), and later in life a respected friend. She was also a life long friend of my Mom and Dad. My wife grew up on the same street and knew her just as well. <br />
<br />
As we received the news on the top deck of the cruise ship we looked to the setting sun, as I held my mom and we cried together watching the sun fade away. For as much pain as there was in that moment, watching the sun fall from the heavens, we both knew that there was no better place or time to have to deal with the emotions of the moment. <br />
<br />
Luckily I had my camera with me (when do I not?) and I was able to take a few shots to memorialize that blissfully painful moment. And that's why I love photography too, such emotions can be captured forever with a single click of a button.

  • Train at the Duluth and Iron Range Railroad Company Depot in Two Harbors Minnesota. To move ore from Minnesota's iron ranges to steel plants near the eastern Great Lakes, companies had to develop extensive transportation systems. The Minnesota Iron Company laid the tracks of the Duluth & Iron Range Railroad Company (1883-84), platted the townsite of Two Harbors where the rail line reached Lake Superior (1885) and built this imposing depot (1907) to serve its business interests in the region.

  • The Blue and Gold Macaw Ara ararauna is one of the most beautiful large parrots. It is a sweet tempered and affectionate parrot, and has one of the best all around personalities of the large Macaws. This bird makes a great companion for a single person. But it is friendly with everyone, including other birds, when it's well socialized. Although some Macaws are one-person type birds, the Blue and Gold is right at home in a family type situation as well.<br />
<br />
This large parrot is also sometimes called the Blue and Yellow Macaw, or you may come across a larger variant from Bolivia called the Bolivian Blue and Gold Macaw. The Bolivian variety is distinguished by its larger size and its coloring. On all these Macaws the colors are vibrant, but the Bolivian has more of a true blue rather than the teal blue seen in the average Blue and Gold. They all share the same wonderful personality and characteristics.<br />
<br />
The Blue and Gold Macaw is very adaptive. Whatever environment they are in, it becomes quite normal for them. If they are around many people, they will accept many people. When well trained and socialized, Blue and Gold Macaws enjoy participating in all sorts of outdoor and public activities with their owners. We've seen them attending public festivals on their owners arms. One woman regularly took her Macaw with her to Western line dance classes. Another woman would take her Blue and Gold horseback riding with her. There are bird leashes available so you can take your feathered friend wherever you go, and they just adapt. They ride well in a car on a bird car seat

  • A banded Wood Duck Hen (female) swims ever so gently throught he stream with a display of vibrant plumage.<br />
<br />
The Wood Duck is a medium-sized perching duck. The female, less colourful, has a white eye-ring and a whitish throat. Both adults have crested heads. Females line their nests with feathers and other soft materials, and the elevation provides some protection from predators. Unlike most other ducks, the Wood Duck has sharp claws for perching in trees and can, in southern regions, produce two broods in a single season--the only North American duck that can do so.<br />
<br />
Female Wood Ducks breed during their first year. The breeding season begins in April in the southern portion of the range. In northern areas, Wood Ducks arrive on the breeding ground soon after the ice thaws, usually in early May. There are, however, reports of Wood Ducks in Canada beginning to nest as early as the second week of April.

As local wineries near St. Louis go we're found in the white clapboard lined town of Defiance at the entrance of Missouri's wine country. Defiance hasn't changed much since its early days as a railroad depot stop. Wine devotees, bicyclists of the Katy trail, and motorcycle enthusiasts are among its many visitors these days.
