Broemmelsiek Park provides a recreational space for individuals throughout the St. Charles County area. This park offers more than seven miles of multi-use trails as well as an off-leash dog area with small water features in which dogs may swim. The trail is open for equestrian use, bicycling and hiking. There are multiple fishing lakes in the park that are stocked with bass, catfish and bluegill. The astronomy station in the park offers a viewing site with ten concrete viewing stations equipped with telescopes. <br />
<br />
Keeping with the county's mission to preserve green space, the St. Charles County Parks Department is designing Broemmelsiek Park as a passive recreation area focused on the natural features of the land. The 384 acre property is located in southwestern St. Charles County five miles west of Highway 40-61 off State Route DD. Broemmelsiek Park features several lakes, a blend of oak-hickory forest and rolling pastures suitable for a variety of recreation activities and park amenities.

  • Watching the sun set in the shores of Kona Hawaii on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship "Pride Of America"<br />
<br />
May 6th was a roller-coaster of emotions. It was Linda's and My 20th Anniversary, so there was much joy and celebration in our moods. Just as the sun was starting to set along the shores of Kona, Hawaii on our trip, we received the news that a long time family friend of 30+ years had just passed away. <br />
<br />
She was a "Neighborhood Parent" to me growing up (this was back in the days when, not only was it allowed, it was expected that neighbors should reprimand us youngsters for doing stupid things if they noticed it), and later in life a respected friend. She was also a life long friend of my Mom and Dad. My wife grew up on the same street and knew her just as well. <br />
<br />
As we received the news on the top deck of the cruise ship we looked to the setting sun, as I held my mom and we cried together watching the sun fade away. For as much pain as there was in that moment, watching the sun fall from the heavens, we both knew that there was no better place or time to have to deal with the emotions of the moment. <br />
<br />
Luckily I had my camera with me (when do I not?) and I was able to take a few shots to memorialize that blissfully painful moment. And that's why I love photography too, such emotions can be captured forever with a single click of a button.

The North Shore of Lake Superior runs from Duluth, Minnesota, United States, at the southwestern end of the lake, to Thunder Bay and Nipigon, Ontario, Canada, in the north to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, in the east. The shore is characterized by alternating rocky cliffs and cobblestone beaches, with rolling hills and ridges covered in boreal forest inland from the lake, through which scenic rivers and waterfalls descend as they flow to Lake Superior. Americans often refer only to the Minnesota shoreline from Duluth to the international border at Grand Portage as the North Shore

<br />
The trails in this 500+ acre park are in 2 separate sections joined together by restored grassy prairie. They are a mixture of hard packed dirt trails, several small rock gardens, and a few rocky creek crossings.<br />
<br />
The front section is accessed via the concrete bridge that is just off the first parking lot. It's a mixture of wooded single track and open meadows, with several short but steep climbs. Rocky in the beginning, it switches to a dirt base as you start up the ridge.<br />
<br />
The trail then follows the contours of the meadows to the second section, making for a fun, but quick trip to the wooded area in the back of the park. A winding, dirt hillside trail, mixed with rocks leads to a creek crossing, then a rocky ascent as the trail meanders along another ridge line leading to a picturesque view of a local equestrian farm and pond. This section features a wide swooping turn which leads back across the power line alley that divides this part of the trail.

  • Watching huge flocks of Snow Geese swirl down from the sky, amid a cacophony of honking, is a little like standing inside a snow globe. These loud, white-and-black geese can cover the ground in a snowy blanket as they eat their way across fallow cornfields or wetlands. Among them, you might see a dark form with a white head?a color variant called the ?Blue Goose.? Snow Geese have skyrocketed in numbers and are now among the most abundant waterfowl on the continent. <br />
<br />
The Snow Goose, also known as the Blue Goose, is a North American species of goose. Its name derives from the typically white plumage. The genus of this bird is disputed. Snow Geese don't like to travel without the company of another couple dozen geese and can form flocks of several hundred thousand. Family groups forage together on wintering grounds, digging up roots and tubers from muddy fields and marshes. In flight, they are steady on the wing with even wingbeats.
    Snow Geese Over New Melle.jpg
  • The Snow Goose has two color plumage morphs, white (snow) or gray/blue (blue), thus the common description as snows and blues. White-morph birds are white except for black wing tips, but blue-morph geese have bluish-grey plumage replacing the white except on the head, neck and tail tip. The immature blue phase is drab or slate-gray with little to no white on the head, neck, or belly.<br />
<br />
Outside of the nesting season, they usually feed in flocks. In winter, snow geese feed on left-over grain in fields. They migrate in large flocks, often visiting traditional stopover habitats in spectacular numbers. Snow Geese often travel and feed alongside Greater White-fronted Geese; in contrast, the two tend to avoid travelling and feeding alongside Canada Geese, which are often heavier birds.<br />
<br />
The breeding population of the Lesser Snow Goose exceeds 5 million birds, an increase of more than 300 percent since the mid-1970s. The population is increasing at a rate of more than 5 percent per year. Non-breeding geese (juveniles or adults that fail to nest successfully) are not included in this estimate, so the total number of geese is even higher. Lesser Snow Goose population indices are the highest they have been since population records have been kept, and evidence suggests that large breeding populations are spreading to previously untouched sections of the Hudson Bay coastline.

  • Taken on the Minnesota side of Lake Superior about 10 miles from the Canada border. The heavenly skies frame this vibrant wooded waterscape vista looking across the great lake.<br />
<br />
Lake Superior is the largest of the five traditionally demarcated Great Lakes of North America. It is bounded to the north by the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of Minnesota, and to the south by the U.S. states of Wisconsin and Michigan. It is generally considered the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area. It is the world's third-largest freshwater lake by volume.<br />
<br />
The lake is fed by over 200 rivers. The largest include the Nipigon River, the St. Louis River, the Pigeon River, the Pic River, the White River, the Michipicoten River, the Bois Brule River and the Kaministiquia River. Lake Superior drains into Lake Huron by the St. Marys River.<br />
<br />
Over 80 species of fish have been found in Lake Superior. Species native to the lake include: bloater, brook trout, burbot, cisco, lake sturgeon, lake trout, lake whitefish, longnose sucker, muskellunge, northern pike, pumpkinseed, rock bass, round whitefish, smallmouth bass, walleye, white sucker and yellow perch. In addition, many fish species have been either intentionally or accidentally introduced to Lake Superior: atlantic salmon, brown trout, carp, chinook salmon, coho salmon, freshwater drum, pink salmon, rainbow smelt, rainbow trout, round goby, ruffe, sea lamprey and white perch.

  • Through the field of reeds and weeds this old barn and workshop are the remnants of a farmstead long forgotten. This rural scene was taken in Marthasville, Missouri, a city in Warren County. <br />
<br />
The Katy Trail, a 225-mile long bike path, passes through Marthasville, and the original grave of Daniel Boone is located there. In 1845, Boone's remains were disinterred and moved to Kentucky for burial. Resentment in Missouri about the disinterment grew over the years, and a legend arose that Boone's remains never left Missouri. Because of the many wineries from here east to Defiance, Marthasville is considered to mark one end of the Missouri Weinstrasse.
