• A blooming Redbud Tree Abstraction. A Redbud is a small tree with a sturdy upright trunk which divides into stout branches that usually spread to form a broad flat head. • The spring bloom is a strong increase in phytoplankton abundance that typically occurs in the early spring and lasts until late spring or early summer. Spring blooms typically last until late spring or early summer, at which time the bloom collapses due to nutrient depletion in the stratified water column and increased grazing pressure by zooplankton.

This week the earliest of spring flowers are starting to dot the landscape with color and the tree buds give a promise of warmer days ahead. Daffodils are in full bloom, as well as crocus and dwarf iris. Color is just beginning to peek out from the hyacinths, showing hints of purple and pink.

Spring flowers come along and cheer us up at a time when we most need it -- after we've somehow survived another long winter. Speaking for myself, it wouldn't be going too far to say that they help me convalesce as I recuperate from Old Man Winter's months-long blustery barrage.

  • Daffodils come in all sizes from 5-inch blooms on 2-foot stems to half-inch flowers on 2-inch stems. Largely for show purposes, but also for guidance in gardening, certain species and named cultivars have been determined to be miniatures and must compete by themselves in daffodil shows.

Depending on which botanist you talk to, there are between 40 and 200 different daffodil species, subspecies or varieties of species and over 25,000 registered cultivars (named hybrids) divided among the thirteen divisions of the official classification system.

Narcissus is a genus of mainly hardy, mostly spring-flowering, bulbous perennials in the Amaryllis family, subfamily Amaryllidoideae. Various common names including daffodil, narcissus, and jonquil are used to describe all or some of the genus

  • Canna (or canna lily, although not a true lily) is a genus of nineteen species of flowering plants. The species have large, attractive foliage and horticulturists have turned it into a large-flowered and bright garden plant. In addition, it is one of the world's richest starch sources, and is an agricultural plant. Although a plant of the tropics, most cultivars have been developed in temperate climates and are easy to grow in most countries of the world as long as they can enjoy at least 6?8 hours average sunlight during the summer.

The plants are large tropical and subtropical perennial herbs with a rhizomatous rootstock. The broad, flat, alternate leaves, that are such a feature of this plant, grow out of a stem in a long narrow roll and then unfurl. The leaves are typically solid green but some cultivars have glaucose, brownish, maroon, or even variegated leaves.

  • In my continued effort to add some items with a bit more vibrancy and extend my color pallet choices I thought this was a decent shot. We still have some rose buds popping up in mid December Missouri weather, which is highly unusual. Caught this new bud bent just towards the horizon. There was just enough light pushing through to capture a decent backdrop hue.

  • A bold and vibrant macro closeup of a pink and purple Marguerite Daisy against a textured rainbow colored backdrop. A bit of a hippy vibe that screamed a bit of flower power for me.

This spray flower has a classic bloom with many ray petals radiating out from a disk-shaped center. This colorful package of popping purple tinted daisies would add an alluring appeal to any wedding bouquet, table centerpiece or flower arrangement!

The Marguerite daisy or also know as the Argyranthemum frutescens, is a lovely daisy featuring a large middle of the flower generally yellow but depending on the variety they can also be pinkish in color.

The petals of the Marguerite are generally white, pink, or yellow. They can have single or double blooms and they are usually 1-2 inches in size. The leaves and such of Marguerite daisies are a blue-green color, thin and almost fern like.

The Marguerite daisy does best in richly fertilized, well drained soil. They also like to be planted in fully sunny areas. They work really well as a boarder or on the outside edge of your year or garden adding the perfect splash of color to the area.

This type of daisy is a pretty hardy plant, if you have them planted outside make sure to water them about twice a week. If the plant starts to wilt it is a sign that they need a bit more water. Keep the soil moist pretty often, but never all the time because like with most plants, their root will rot if left in constant water.
    Flower Empowered.jpg
  • A row of multi-colored gerber daisies from the garden from a stem-up perspective.

Gerbera daisy flowers exhibit large (4") blooms with yellowish central disks surrounded by colorful rays. The rays are most commonly yellow, red or orange. However, growers have also produced varieties in white, pink and violet. Gerbera daisy flowers reach a little over one foot in height, with a width slightly less than that.

Whether you are growing gerbera daisies as perennials or as annuals, water them faithfully; and fertilize regularly for optimal blooming. Gerbera daisy flowers are susceptible to crown rot, so don't plant them too deeply. They are also susceptible to powdery mildew, so avoid overhead watering; and water the plants early in the day. Plants bought at the florist should be introduced only gradually to direct sunlight outdoors; otherwise, they'll wilt.

  • A soft and beautiful Lilium Stargazer Lily. The Stargazer lily was created in 1978 by Leslie Woodriff, a lily breeder in California. Woodriff called the new cross Stargazer, because the blooms faced towards the sky. Known for its striking white, red, and pink petals, and heavenly scent, this lily has become a favorite for many occasions.

  • Yup, it's October 7th and I still have new rose blooms. This is an Alex Rose, I had a section of pink ones, and another of white that have grown together and are producing these beauties

  • The meaning of pink roses is as beautiful and as graceful as the delicate blossom. They're often seen in bridal arrangements, thank you or congratulations bouquets. Considering the word "rose" brings to mind the faint blush of a fair maiden's cheeks, it's not surprising these blooms are a favorite to give and receive.

Pink is not just for girls, and it is not just a pretty color. Pink roses have deep significance when it comes to affections given and received. The most widely accepted interpretation of pink roses is grace and gentility.

An admiration for beauty, refinement and enduring grace is what the pink rose connotes. The receiver of the pink rose can rest assured that he or she is admired for possessing a certain respectability and decorum not commonly found in others.

The meaning of pink roses, as expressed by their lovely color is happiness and joy. Being themselves a joy to behold, pink roses express fun and happiness. The pink rose denotes that the receiver is a pleasure to behold, a pleasure to have in company. Thus, it is an indication of deep joy. They indicate happiness or pride, a heart-felt appreciation.

  • A Soft Deep Red Tulip Contrasted Against A Rough Textured Backdrop.

This is one of the world's most easily recognized and loved flowers. Tulip Flowers are voracious sun seekers (like the sunflower) and will sway their heads in crazy contortions seeking out the best angle for light. This makes them a symbol of opportunity, adjustment, advancement, and aspiration. They are commonly thought to represent attainment of spiritual awareness too. Because they are from bulbs, and return every year (like the daffodil) tulips are symbolic of resurrection and determination. The immediately identifiable shape of their colorful blooms make them a comfortable flower.

A Turkish legend may be responsible for the red tulip's symbolism. The story goes that a prince named Farhad was love struck by a maiden named Shirin. When Farhad learned that Shirin had been killed, he was so overcome with grief that he killed himself - riding his horse over the edge of a cliff. It's said that a scarlet tulip sprang up from each droplet of his blood, giving the red tulip the meaning 'perfect love.'
