• The town of New Melle is home to one of the oldest Lutheran settlements in St. Charles County, Missouri. In 1839, settlers from Melle in Lower Saxony settled here, thus the name of "New Melle." St. Paul's parish was later established in 1844. The parish predates the Missouri Synod by three years, and it eventually became one of only twelve churches who signed the original charter which established the Missouri Synod in 1847.

 • Yellow Farmhouse is a St. Louis area winery located on Highway 94 in St. Charles County. As local wineries near St. Louis go we're found in the white clapboard lined town of Defiance at the entrance of Missouri's wine country. Defiance hasn't changed much since its early days as a railroad depot stop. Wine devotees, bicyclists of the Katy trail, and motorcycle enthusiasts are among its many visitors these days.

 • The view from the Trail - There's a parking lot with nearly 100 slots at the St Charles end of the bridge (photo below). But it's at bridge level, high above the Katy Trail. A paved ramp leads down to the trail.

If you park there, save some energy to climb the ramp back up to the parking lot when you return. It's a 1/4 mile of climbing: the switchbacks can be seen through the bridge's chain-link fence in the photo at left. The Creve Coeur side involves a little bit of climbing, but it's a shorter ramp and a lower degree of incline than the ramp to the Katy Trail.

 • Taken at Broemmelsiek Park

Named for the family of Jack Broemmelsiek, who lived on the property for more than 30 years and dedicated their lives to promoting conservation activities, Broemmelsiek Park measures 494 acres in size and features many natural and recreational amenities.

The region - boasting fertile pasture land and an abundant oak-hickory forest - has a long agricultural history in St. Charles County. Records date settlement of the area to the late 1700s, and several structures built on what is now Broemmelsiek Park can be dated to the mid-1800s. To highlight this important link to the County's past, the park's agricultural heritage center (to be added in future development) will display farming operations from the 1800s to the present day.

 • A great little place that I've totally missed over the years. I ate here today and had a burger that was awesome. The fries were also the big thick kind, not the little dairy sissy kind. The burger was thick and juicy and taste like it was grilled over wood. The place is small... There's even a little closet sized room that has a barber chair in it and apparently on Thurs afternoons people come to get a haircut. Quaint eh?

 • In the early 1940's, the area at August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area was used by the Department of Army as a TNT munitions plant to support the World War II effort. There are still 100 of the old TNT storage bunkers that exist on the area.

The Department encourages recreational use of the area by the public, while furnishing fish and wildlife with the resources necessary to be healthy and abundant. We encourage you to walk the hiking trails, drive the auto tour, photograph the wildlife or simply sit under a tree and enjoy the sights and sounds of the outdoors.

 • Portions of the August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area were used by the Department of Army in the 1940's for TNT and DNT production and by the Atomic Energy Commission in the 1960's for uranium ore processing. The affected portions were all part of a federal environmental cleanup project and required to meet certain environmental health and safety standards. The area is now considered to be safe for all recreational pursuits allowed on the area, as well as the wildlife found within the area.
