5 imagesAfter adding a second feeder with some larger seeds it only took a few days to start attracting some new birds to the yard. The first to start showing up were a couple Downy Woodpeckers (Male based on the red tuft on the back of the head). It may be a Hairy Woodpecker, but based on the size and smaller breast area I am running with Downy Woodpecker unless proven otherwise :)

10 imagesOK, so yes, I have some what of a fascination with the lady's (Lady Bugs that is just to clarify if my wife is reading). They are fun to photograph as you have to work a bit harder to get a good shot, and they make for some fun editing to me.

19 imagesThe longwing butterflies have unusually long lifespans and high fecundity rates, which largely result from their augmented diet. Instead of surviving on food stores from the larval stage or solely sipping flower nectar, adult longwing butterflies are avid pollen eaters. These trait make them eminently suitable for butterfly farming and butterfly gardening. Also, Adult Longwings may live for several months, much longer than most butterflies. The longwing butterflies are also known as Heliconians. They are brightly colored butterflies with long forewings. Once placed in their own family, they are now considered closely related to the fritillaries. Larvae of most longwings feed on passion vines, and this host plant imparts noxious chemicals to the larvae which are carried over to the adult butterflies. This relationship is identical to the monarch butterflies' reliance on its host plant, milkweed, for defense. Predators find these chemicals distasteful and avoid eating the butterflies.

3 imagesHigh Key Rose was a spur of the moment inspiration. I Had a rose sitting around that I forgot about from a previous photo session a couple months prior. The old, dead, shriveled rose was much too ugly to photograph in a straight forward manner. In addition, it was very delicate from the months of decay, too much so that to move the rose, it would just crumbling away. Looking at this once vibrant beauty I was inspired to create something that had this vibrancy and lovely tones from the now, dead representation of it's former glory.

4 imagesI had a vision when photographing this tulip arrangement that I was hoping to achieve, which was a bit of a water-colored type of an affect with a bit of a grungy feel. I really wanted to play off of the softer tones in the arrangement while keeping some of the darker contrasts in places. These were the best variations to my approach, still not sure which I am the fondest of.
